The Big Three in Astrology, and Why it’s Important: Sun, Moon & Rising
Today, we’re diving into the Big Three in Astrology and why the Sun, the Moon and the Rising are important components to look up in your birth chart.

Astrological Big Three
Due to pop astrology, magazine horoscopes and big misconceptions surrounding astrology, many people only know their sun sign or star sign. This is what people talk about when they ask for your zodiac sign.
But in fact, the Sun is not the only component of our birth chart. And since each birth chart is unique, we can’t expect everyone to understand and learn each aspect of who they are. Of course not.
Instead, what astrologers and astro lovers came up with is to have an astrological visit card to give them the pattern. This is like a presentation card that can help introduce your overall energy and “vibe” to others with more ease. Hence, the infamous big three: Sun, Moon and Rising.
The Sun, Moon and Rising signs, along with the planets, aspects and houses, are powerful transformation and prediction tools. When understood and used properly, the big three can increase the quality and happiness of your life.

Sun
Just like the Sun is the brightest force in the solar system, the Sun is your ego, your sense of self as well as your identity. This is the core of who you are evolving to become.
In astrology, the Sun explains to us how we share our radiance and light, and as we grow older, we become more and more confident in our skin, therefore expressing healthier stronger expressions of our Sun sign.
The Sun sign is based on the date of birth. And in fact, the sign of our Sun is not all there is to know about our identity. The house and aspects of our Sun are also important pieces of the puzzle.
The Sun also represents our divine masculine, our awareness and conscious mind. This is the long journey we’re striving for as well as our inner navigation system. This is your active and yang polarity.
Moon
The Moon represents our emotional self, your emotions, your intuition but also your nurturing side. Since the Moon dwells in the dark, this luminary represents all that dwells in the shadows: emotions, fears, desires, longings, moods.
While the Sun is the divine masculine, our conscious mind and our yang polarity, the Moon is the opposite. La Luna represents your divine feminine, your subconscious mind, your emotions, intuition as well as nurturing side.
The Moon also stands for our day-to-day manager. This is who you are behind closed doors, your instinctual habits and visceral reactions. Many people, in fact, relate much more with their Moon sign because that’s the energy they usually operate with.
Last but not least, the Moon also reveals a lot when it comes to the matters of the heart, so it is closely linked with our comfort and vulnerability, as well as closeness and openness to others.
As an example, if you share the same Moon sign with someone else, regardless of your Sun signs, you will feel “at home” with each other. A psychic bond may link you two, almost as if you can completely understand each other’s emotional ups and downs.
Rising
The rising sign, or ascendant, is basically the zodiac sign hitting the eastern horizon line the minute you were born. It is calculated with your exact time of birth.
And in astrology, the rising sign is how you greet the world, how you approach situations, people and projects. It determines how you focus your energy and attention in life too. Astrologers like to call the ascendant: the mask we wear in this incarnation. While the Sun may be the letter, the rising is the forever-attached envelope.
Because the rising is the cusp of the 1st House, it is an indicator of how others perceive you as well as how you present yourself. This is your physical body, appearance and outward style.
What’s interesting is that once we know the Rising sign, we can easily get a sense of the houses, since the rising is the cusp of the first house.
And by the way, did you know that most horoscopes are written through analysis of the ascendant? Next time you pick up a pop astrology magazine column, make sure to read the content designated to the sign on your ascendant. You may be surprised by the accuracy.
